Last Thursday was the opening of two great new shows at London Miles Gallery, located in our East London pop- up space. Coming To Town, by Nom Kinnear King and Xue Wang recieved a great response, with both artists enjoying their first UK dual solo.
Xue Wang was in the spot light with her dark but sweet pop surrealist oil paintings and viewers were capitavated by Nom Kinnear King's portraits.

Downstairs, INSA's 6 x 4 foot painting and Tom Bagshaw's digital masterpiece were the two favourites from the Guilty Pleasures and Modern Vices exhibition.

Two Exhibitions opening This June at London Miles

London Miles Gallery is proud to annouce two exhibitions opening this June.

Coming To Town, a dual solo show inspired by the fair. Xue Wang and Nom Kinnear King team up in this exciting themed show, presenting a collection of more than 20 new oil paintings.

Opening in the same location on the same night, is Guilty Pleasures and Modern Vices. A group show featuring new work by 10 UK contemporary artists.
Each artists has been given a vice or guilty pleasure to recreate in to a visual representation.

Artists like Alex Young, Insa, Tom Bagshaw, Craww, and Carne to name a few will be showcased.

Opening night of both exhibitions is

Xue Wang and Nom Kinnear King team up in our upcoming show, "Coming to Town!"- an exhibition inspired by Circus Life. Its the first large showcase of their work in the UK, where both Nom and Xue take over the complete top floor of our East London Gallery space and transforming it in to our very own little Circus.

XUE WANG:

Xue Wang says this about her collection, "My theme of the fairground started with a chance visit to a traditional steam fair at night. The cult movie Carnival of Souls, which uses a dream-within-a-dream plot device, also intrigued me. What fed my imagination was not the hurly-burly bustle of the crowds but the sense of isolation and melancholy. The girl here is a nocturnal soul who plays with her companions in the veil of darkness. All the punters have gone home and the little group gather to celebrate their own fun fair."

Last night, The May 12th 2011 saw the opening of Literal.Eyes- the all new group exhibition featuring the work of 30 European artists. We had a great crowd come out to support and artists such as Xue Wang, Nom Kinnear King, Adam Oehlers, Craww, Alex Young and David Marsh in attendance.

As we prepare for our all new group show, Opening on May 12th 2011 we thought it would be a good time to share with you some preview images.

Tom Bagshaw from Bath, UK has yet again created a piece that leaves us speachless. His digital paintings are often so real you feel you can reach out and touch them. This one is titled, 'Titania' and is inspired from A Midsummer nights dream. (Right)

European female artist Linnea Strid has taken inspiration from My Little Mermaid, and used her incredible talent with oil to create an under water portrait. (Left)

This May, London Miles opens its doors to a new group of emerging talent from across Europe, showcasing a range of artists from the recent graduates to the established.

Literal.Eyes- 30 artists from across Europe translate their favourite works of Literature in to Visual Masterpieces.

London Miles is proud to present an all-new group exhibition that takes a closer look at the content found inside the dusty book covers of iconic written works by great literary masters from across all generations. Whether inspired by a novel, poem, or a poignant phrase from their chosen literary piece, 30 artists from across Europe are recreating how they visually and literally interpret their all time favourite piece of narrative into a painting.

Iconic writers whose narratives are being recreated include the all famous children’s favourite and cartoonist Dr. Seuss to our very own national literary hero; William Shakespeare. Artists have chosen pieces of literature from a broad range of authors, as well as foreign writers relevant to their home origin. Some examples include, digital painter Tom Bagshaw who will recreate ‘A Midsommers Night Dream’ by Shakespeare, Nom Kinnear King paints ‘The House of Sprits’ by Isabel Allende and Camilla D’Errico takes inspiration from the Opera “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi.

The show opens in an all new gallery space in East London!! Opening on Thursday, May 12^th 2011 from 6pm to 11pm.

LM Interview: Derek Weisberg- the art of sculptor

London Miles recently had a virtual chat with California based sculptor, Derek Wiesberg. We thought it would be a good idea to share with you just what this truly talented fella has been up to and what makes him create his impressively detailed characters.

1. Your mediums of choice:

My primary medium of choice is clay/ceramics, I have been working with clay for close to 20 years, I guess I fell in love with it as a material early on. However I will make work with whatever material I need to convey my ideas most appropriately.

2. Three words to describe your artwork:

I dont know. . . . . . I guess: Figurative, sculpture, emotive, Humanism, accessible, sensitive, contemplative, spiritual, Damn, sorry thats more then 3 I couldn't do it.

3. What inspires you to create the characters you do? Life inspires me. My world and the world around me, my relationships and experiences. I am interested in depicting human emotions and the human condition. The stylization of the figures is meant to emphasis these emotions, for example the eyes wide set is a way to convey and express ideas of vulnerability, prey and disfunction. Really everything that comes into my eyes, ears, thoughts whatever inspires the work.

4. Are your sculptures individuals, or are they part of a growing family?

All of the above, I usually say they are all self portraits, as I feel most honest when I am making work about my life and the world around me, my thoughts and feelings. However, my family definitely comes into my work and so the work can also take on a kind of growing family. For the past several years I was interested in depicting this kind of "universal man", or "everyday man", but lately the figures have become more individual, not neceassarily specific people, but individual.

5. How old were you when you started sculpting?

When I could hold a fork and had mash potatoes on my plate!

6. How long does one take to complete?

It really varies depending on the piece, and the scale and such, it could be a few hours to a few weeks to do the actual sculpting. But ceramics is such a process based material; you know, sculpt, wait, sculpt more, wait, finish sculpting, wait for the clay to dry, fire the piece, glaze the piece and fire it again, repeat firing if necessary, so really start to finish it takes several weeks.

7. What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment I am working on a few pieces for an art fair coming up in San Francisco, and also a really big piece for Anno Domini's http://www.galleryad.com/ 10 year anniversary show coming up in the beginning of next year.

8. Which piece of yours is your favourite or one that you are most proud
of? Do you have an image of it?

That is a hard question, there are a lot of works I like, but usually after I have made the piece, I have learned and gotten most of what I will from it and am ready to move onto the next. With that said, The "Olam Haba" installation is one of my favorite things I've done. Also a few of the piece I just finished for my last solo show Auroral Dreaming, "Stares Into Infinity" and "Wreaths Sent Down the River". Also a piece that I really like which you will be showing at London Miles "Give Me a Skull So I Can Remember You". I like those works

9. Where would you like your characters to trave to next?

Maybe New York, Maybe Eastern Europe like Prague or Budapest, Maybe Berlin, all for different reasons and purposes.

10. Favourite music to listen to while working.

Rap music! Good ol' 90's era and really obscure/underground/indie/weirdo rap are my favorites. Classical music as well.

11. Do you work in the day or are you a night owl?
I'm a Lark and an Owl, wake up early, go to sleep late, and work those feathers to the bone the whole time in between.

Literal.eyes features the work of 30 European contemporary artists, each artist has been requested to take inspiration from a piece of literature, from playwrites to poets. The exhibition showcases the visual translation from written works by from George Orwell, Shakespeare, Hc Andersen,Dr. Seuess, Edgar Allan Poe, Albert Cohen to Haruki Murakami and more.

The exhibition will open in East London at our new POP UP venue.

In association with London Miles Gallery, Stim.u.lus is proud to announce a new workshop developed to help you gain valuable hands on experience to work in an art gallery environment.
Starting this April 2011, the course, Gallery Management and Exhibition Studies is aimed at current art and business students, undergraduates and entreprenuers wanting to gain valuable hands on knowledge about how to manage an art gallery and organize art exhibitions.

Gallery Management and Exhibition Studies

The Gallery Management and Exhibition studies course was created by London Miles Gallery curator and manager, Tina Ziegler. The course will teach you the tools and requirements needed to work in an art gallery and manage art exhibitions, either on your own or for a commercial space.

The three week, 8 hour programme will help you understand the day to day management of an art space, the responsibilities of a gallery manager and how to create, develop and organize an art exhibition from start to finish.

The super talented illustrator, artist, and all around rock star Alex Young has just released a new print edition as part of the current Pens and Needles Exhibition here at London Miles.

This huge A1 print is just beautiful, printed on somerset watercolour paper, 350 gram paper and printed to perfection. Its a nice heavy weight paper and its all archival printing- so it will last and last...

Luke Kopycinski and Victor Castillo's First London showcase

This December we have a very exciting two man show coming to London.
Luke Kopycinski from Austrailia and Victor Castillo from Chilie will be showcasing a collection of original paintings and drawings at London Miles in their first showcase in London.

Victor Castillo

Born in 1973 in Santiago de Chile where he was a member of the art research collective Caja Negra. His Work has been shown in various countries such as Spain, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, the United States, Canada, Belgium and Taiwan. The work of Victor Castillo strikes like a swift blow to the stomach and stirs the innards of a popular iconography fed by comics, illustration and television. His drawing produce slogans on daily consumption and monstrous beings enslaved to flesh and money. This production, consumption and digestion of statements reveal the violence of everyday life and denounce the universality of rationality incarnated by diabolical figures of animals or humans. At the moment he lives and works in Barcelona.

Luke Kopycinski

Luke Kopycinski is an Australian born artist currently working and living in Melbourne, Australia. His work is intriguing, dark and has an underlying current of something very human. Best described as Dark Noir, his subject matter is of the beautiful and the melancholy, aspects of the people around him, both what they project on the outside and what they keep inside. His oils are a mix of realism and impressionism, a mixture of strong soft shining lights and heavy sharp shadows that centre the focus of the pieces. His graphite works have been described as painting themselves, illusionary in depth and form with imagery like deceptively frozen moments.

DUSTER UA comes to London for a one day seminar at London Miles Gallery

London Miles Gallery is hosting an afternoon with New York subway artist Duster, on December 4th, 2010. Curated by Paul 'Don' Smith, Duster will be traveling outside of the USA for the first time in his life, to give a talk about his legendary career as a New York subway graffiti artist during the 70's and 80's. The afternoon will include an exhibition of original and rare photographs from Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper, authors of the graffiti and subway artists bible 'SUBWAY ART', an exhibition of limited edition prints and original artwork by Duster, and a one hour Q and A with the artist as he talks through his experiences as a Bronx, New York train writer.

Visitors to the event will enjoy a private screening of STYLE WARS; the original Hip Hop documentary directed by Tony Silver and co- produced with Henry Chalfant. The film was awarded the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the 1983 Sundance Film Festival. STYLE WARS is regarded as the indispensable documentation of New York street culture and subway art of the early '80s, the filmic record of a golden age of youthful creativity that exploded into the world from a city in crisis. More than 35 International artists recreate historical works of art in this modern day contemporary art show. Each artist has personally selected a piece from before WWII that has inspired them in someway or another, and have recreated it in their own way. Paying homage to the masters before our time, and reminding the current generations of the living talent that we are surrounded by.

Hi Fructose interviews Ekundayo for our upcoming show at London Miles Gallery

As you may already know, we have a great show opening up next Friday. Featuring the artwork of Ekundayo, Morning Breath and Fernando Chamarelli.

Hi Fructose magazine from California recently caught up with Ekundayo and took a visit to his studio to speak about the upcoming exhibition and the first time he will be exhibited in the UK!

"Hi-Fructose favorite Ekundayo (HF Vol. 9) will be showing this coming October 8th over at London Miles Gallery. Showing alongside New York's own Morning Breath and Fernando Chamarelli from Brazil, this three person group show will serve as the London debut for all three artists. Though the differences vary greatly stylistically, all three artists are masters in their respective fields and this show should serve as an engaging introduction from across the Atlantic."

LMG Interviews MORNING BREATH.

Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto are better known as Morning Breath which is the name of their Brooklyn based graphic design company. The duo have accumulated an impressive resume of clientele ranging from Zoo York Skateboards to Album design for bands such as Slayer, Foo Fighters and T.V on the Radio.
Their work often depicts boldly coloured, mixed-up layers of Old Skool advertisement slogans, pin-up girls and comic book style characters. Its hard to know where to look first! Morning Breath will be coming to London for the first ever time as part of London Miles’ group exhibition alongside Ekundayo and Fernando Chamarelli.

Why the name Morning Breath?

The name Morning Breath comes from the title of a song a friend of ours wrote. One night when Jason and I were thinking of names for our new found venture, we were listening to music drinking some beers, and put on a 7” from a friend of ours band named Sweet Diesel. We thought what a great/fucked up name for our new company. We looked no further.

Could you give a brief summary of your line of work

Morning Breath does a broad range of work ranging from straight up graphic design/illustration to commercial projects that take on a look and feel from our more personal work. We paint and experiment with personal work along side of commercial projects. Sometimes it becomes a juggling act to maintain both worlds.

What mediums do you guys use?

Most of our paintings are done with a combination of acrylic paint and silkscreen. We paint primarily on wood board.

How and why did you both start doing art?

We both have been creating art since childhood. I don’t know if there is an answer to why?, we just do, and in a way always have been creating art. I guess if there is an answer it’s been different throughout stages of our lives. If you ask why we do it now, I guess it’s just a need to escape the confounds of commercial work. Although one might think even our commercial work is creative, it still has more compromise than we’d like.

Did you know each other before the formation of Morning Breath? Where and how did you both meet?

We both worked at Think skateboards in San Francisco in the mid nineties. That is where we began to collaborate, and eventually developed our method of creating art.

Was buildinga work dynamic difficult for you at all and if you hadn’t begun working together, how do you think your artistic styles would be different today?

The building of our work dynamic came about very naturally, we each offered something that the other didn’t have. Jason was trained as a graphic designer, and I was an illustrator. Had we not joined forces I guess we both would have evolved, but only in our respective areas of art.

Have you ever been to London?

Jason had been to London about a decade ago, I have never been.

Will your work for the upcoming show consist of any British influences for this show?

I don’t think there will be much in the way of British influence on our art. Most of the influence on our art comes from 1950’s to 1970’s Advertising and typography. We take the ideas from that era and remix with a fucked up broken aesthetic.

Did you guys make any kind of alterations to your work for the upcoming exhibition at London Miles because you will be showing to a different audience or, is audience a non-factor for you?

The audience is really a non factor for us. When it comes to our painting we’re doing it for Morning Breath. Our commercial work forces us to keep the client in mind, so when it comes to our personal work, we need the freedom.

You guys have been doing a lot of incredible design work for albums recently, who has been your favourite musician/band to work with?

The Band we had the most fun on the Project was wit

h Queens of the Stone Age. That was one of the fewMusic projects that very clearly let the Morning Breath aesthetic come through.

You recently teamed up the merchandise monster, Upper Playground, to what extent do you feel that this helped you gain recognition?

Upper Playground was pivotal in getting us exposure. In 2006 they published a book of our Art, along with a showin their Portland gallery space. There is also a bit of a connection with Juxtapoz that also brought us to their readers attention.

What is your creative process, how do you amalgamate your ideas?

When we are working on our personnel work there is very much a free flow of ideas, and theprocess is experimental within the confines of our familiarity. Our paintings are a reflection of the tag team approach that we take. We don’t force the evolution of our paintings, but just let our feelings toward them add, or subtract over time.

What is your creative process when working with clients?

When working with clients, we often take an opposite approach than we take with our paintings. Ther is a lot of preplanning and presenting of ideas. I guess you could say it’s much more structured.

Who has been your biggest client to date?

Our biggest client to date has been Universal Music Group. With it’s many sub-labels, and a huge list of Big and small artist, they have kept us fairly busy with work for roughly the past decade.

If you could only choose one, would you rather produce for galleries or continue doing commercial work for clients?

If we could make a comfortable living doing nothing but Gallery art, we would much rather go that route. We both have families, and live in New York. It is very expensive here, and the reality for us is that we need to bring in a solid income if we want to maintain life the way we’ve been living. If we we’re single and younger we probably would give to much a shit about it.

London Miles Interview with Fernando Chamarelli

Fernando Chamarelli Interview

Chamarelli. faultlessly creates paintings with brave and unusual colour palettes that demand a viewer’s attention. You instinctively need to squint and look closer to find, the figures, faces and extravagant birds that tower over the smaller creatures in his paintings. His paintings remind me of harlequin clowns and bright carnival costumes (no doubt connected to the artists Brazilian Background), calmed down his thin and intricate black lining. Chamarelli is a UNESP formed graphic designer, recently being commissioned by sportswear giant Umbro to re-design the Brazilian football shirt crest. He is also an illustrator and painter. He is set to take part in a London Miles group exhibition alongside Ekundayo and Morning Breath in October.

Q:If you could put a name on your style, what would you call it?

I don´t know, maybe Multicultural art

Q:Around what age and stage were you in your education and career, when you created you distinctive style, how did you know that your style was what best represented you?

Ever since I started drawing I made things in several different styles.
I started drawing cartoons, realistic portraits, caricatures, I made tattoo, graffiti and a lot of digital art. During college I had a great time, yet I went without creating anything. After I finished college I started drawing and realized I was doing something different and I thought if I did that with paint on canvas the results could be interesting. That's when I found this style, it was exactly three years ago.

Q:What was growing up in Brazil like?

I was born and raised in a small town nearing the centre of Brazil. A city surrounded by rivers and waterfalls, I had much contact with nature and I think it helped me with organic shapes, colours and the elements that I put in my artworks. There are always animals in my works, especially birds.

Q:Can you give examples of Brazilian culture that is relevant to your work and are there any other cultures that influence you?

Brazilian music is very important to me when I'm creating a new work.
However there are several other elements of Brazilian culture that I put in my paintings:
The fauna, flora, folklore, carnival costumes, artwork of indigenous art, the costumes used in religious festivals, etc.
Brazilian culture is rich, as are several other cultures.
I like Maori, Celtic, Egypt and Chinese art etc
And I have a very strong connection with pre-Columbian cultures: Maya, Inca and Aztec.
Actually I try to add elements of different cultures in my work

Q:Are there any general undertones or a general theme attached to the works you have done for you upcoming exhibition at London Miles?

In the paintings that I did for London Miles the main theme is about Gods and myths, but each painting has its own history.

Q:What feeling do you like to elicit from your viewers?

Hmm, that's a good question. Actually I don’t like to impose a meaning onto the paintings and I don’t expect a single type of feeling. If I painted a horse and the viewer sees a dragon, no problem.
I enjoy seeing people's imagination, I let them be free to imagine whatever they want.
My work can mean something for me and a different meaning for another person.
My intention is always to do something I enjoy, something that I enjoy and that makes me happy

Q:How did you first encounter art and when did you decide to pursue it?

I have no artist relatives and I haven’t been drawing since childhood, like most artists.
In my house there were few books, newspapers and magazines. There were little printed images that inspired me to start creating something. I didn’t have much contact with art at that time.
But when I was 14 my friend gave me a super hero comic and I thought these characters were fantastic.
Since that day I never stopped drawing, and over time I had contact with other kinds of art until I started painting.

Q:When thinking of a piece, do you begin with the subject matter or the general colour palette? Because both elements are powerful in your work.

First I always think about the matter, then I think about the colours. I always try to use new combinations of colour, but always intertwined with white, black and gray.
I worry about the colour balance, I like to make sure that similar tones don’t touch each other.

Q:What is your creative process, how do you form your pieces?

First I turn my radio on.

I draw and study the colours on paper.
then I draw and paint on the canvas.

Q:What was it like re-designing Brazil’s crest for Umbro?

The Umbro release a collection of shirts with tribute to the seven teams that have won the World Cup: Argentina, Brazil, France, England, Italy, Germany and Uruguay. It was called The World Champions Collective. I was the Brazilian artist chosen to create a crest for the shirt of Brazil with my style. It was an amazing project, I liked partici

pating

because I love football.

Q:If you could only

choose one area to continue working in for the rest of you life would you rather be a graphic designer,

or a painter?

Well, I’d rather be a painter in the morning, and a graphic designer in the evening.
But if I had to choose between them, I’d want to be a painter.

LMG Interview with David Marsh aka Mesh 137

Born in 1984, London based artist and Illustrator David Marsh, aka Mesh137 has been systematically rejecting the established 'art world' since he first embarked on a fine art degree at Sheffield Hallam university in 2003. Horrified at his tutors statements that "there was no place for painting and drawing in the art world anymore” Marsh quickly left Hallam university and enrolled on an illustration degree at Westminster University London. Over three years here, he developed his highly original and instantly recognizable style of work, drawing inspiration from various counter culture movements such as skateboarding, graffiti, tattoo and street art, old records, pulp comics and movies and the art of ancient tribes and societies.

Marsh has a real eye for detail and always aims to give his artwork the highest grade finish possible. Skill and effort pay a huge role in the creation of his art. Some of his larger paintings with their busy compositions involving minute patterning, hundreds of individual crystals and meticulous finishes often require hundreds of hours of careful craftsmanship. His illustration work consists of vibrant interpretations of everyday objects like teapots or foods such as cupcakes, amusing characters like his sassy pinup girls and cutesy pirates and his trademark 'Mesh Band' members with their distinctive red skin, long black beards, facial tribal tattoos and tall, animal horned hats.

But if Marsh believes one thing only, it's that he likes to make pretty pictures - that is, he likes first and foremost for his work to be beautiful. He likes to make pictures and paintings that people actually enjoy looking at. A concept that seems to have been forgotten amongst the so-called 'High Brow' art world for many a decade. Furthermore he doesn't take himself or his work too seriously, after all as he puts it he's: "Making paintings, not saving lives or educating children." As such he displays a healthy and rather sly sense of humour in his work, regularly mocking both the world around him and his own person, with a particular penchant for visual and verbal puns.

Q:What is your artistic Background?

I've always enjoyed making pictures - ever since I was really little I was always happiest when I had some paper and pencils or felt tip pens to draw with. I also loved cartoons, comics, games, graphic novels, films and animation and I think these really pushed me towards wanting to be an artist of some kind, be it an illustrator, animator of painter.

Q: There are many different cultural references in your work, are you well traveled?

I haven't traveled much recently, but I was lucky enough to go to some amazing places like Mexico, Japan, Canada, New York and parts of Europe while growing up. I'd say everywhere I've been has had an impact on my work, but I think the modern and historical visual cultures of Mexico and Japan are the most mind blowing. But then as a massive hip-hop fan New York was like a pilgrimage! I'd certainly like to travel through work more - there can't be a more satisfying feeling for an artist then someone on the other side of the world appreciating your work.
Q:What are your inspirations as an artist?

There's so many! : Old comics - classic romance comics, 'Tales from the Future', 'Amazing Adventures' kinda stuff. Retro playboys, glamour and pinup art. Teapots, cupcakes, shoes, gemstones. Ancient tribal culture/art. Classic Indian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese art. Modern day street art, graffiti art and pop art. Old records - for the music and the covers! Anything with patterns on, 80's rap lyrics/clothes, the work of author Hunter S. Thompson, B-movie posters, trashy novels Skateboard culture, old skateboarding videos and magazines. Anime and Manga, classic video games, 60's poster art, being an insomniac, dark rum, golden beers, and finally the music, illustrations and artwork of way too many individuals to mention here!

Q: Your artworks are very intricate; you must have a lot of patience. How long does it take on average to create a piece of work?

I can produce a small painting in around a day or two, but one of my larger paintings with all the tiny details like the crystals and patterning can take me up to a couple of months. I like to give my paintings as perfect a finish as is possible which means working very carefully and slowly, but hopefully it pays off in the end!

Q:Which is your preferred medium?
I use a mixture of mediums : paint pens, spray paints, metallic and acrylic paints, crystals and materials like felt. I normally work on wooden boards andblocks because I love the look and feel of the wood and I can get a much better finish then on canvas. I also like to work digitally, producing work on my Mac.

Q:What would you like to put across to viewers with your artwork?

I don't like to take myself or my work to seriously, so I wouldn't say Im trying to get any real message across. I just like to make pretty pictures and have fun with my work. I do like to include a few cheeky/naughty bits in there that hopefully make people smile but I'm not really m aking any statements - maybe just that 'we should all calm down a little, be a bit nicer to each other and try to have fun and enjoy life. Oh and that 'pirate girls are hot'.

Q:Have you ever had artistic block and how did you overcome this?

I’m lucky in that I've never really had a pr oblem with artistic block - if anything I have a problem with having to many ideas at once and never having enough time to do them all! I have about ten notebooks crammed full of little sketches and notes and ideas for future paintings, illustrations, animations music etc. So it's is definitely not an issue for me!

Q:Do you see yourself as part of an art movement or would you rather not be pigeonholed in such a way?

Yes, I'm the founding member of a new art movement called 'Super Dope Spaced Out Next Level Fine Art Pirates'. No not really! But if you feel you must, then stick me with the 'Talented, hardworking people who are doing amazing artwork' movement or failing them the 'Overly modest movement'.

Q:When you create a piece of work, do you create with others in mind or for your own pleasure/indulgence?

When it comes to my art I try to work to my own tastes and make paintings I'd want to put up on my own wall but it's inevitable you'll be influenced by your audience on some scale when your selling work to make a living. And obviously with commercial work you have to meet a client’s brief, which can be quite ridged.

London Miles Gallery is hosting a silent auction at Westbourne Studios on Sunday the 4th of July to coincide with the closing of their international group show The Next Generation which takes place during Notting Hill’s Visual Arts Festival; an annual spotlight on local showcases and arts talent in one of London’s most vibrant areas.

The silent auction will sell off the individual recycled painted cardboard boxes, which have collectively formed a bright and colourful installation within the atrium of Westbourne Studios. The aim of the installation was to build a platform for up and coming artists living in London and beyond. The project’s goal was to raise awareness not only about the wealth of the artistic talent within the UK, but also the ecological importance of recycling within our boroughs.

All money raised from the silent auction will go directly to London Miles Gallery chosen charity - Kids Company.

Kidsco provides practical, emotional and educational support to 14,000 vulnerable inner-city children across London. For many, the roles of adult and child are reversed and despite profound love, both struggle to survive. Kids Company therefore offers a safe, caring, family environment where support is tailored to the needs of each individual. Kidsco’s services support children who have experienced enormous challenges to lead positive and fulfilling lives. Despite the great difficulties they have endured during their lives, the children Kids Company work with are hugely courageous and embrace fully the support they offer.

Alongside the Art box auction, a separate live auction hosted by Portobello Auctions offering art lovers a a great opportunity to purchase inexpensive art from around £2 to £100. Fifteen top young artists are to be featured in an upcoming exhibition entitled ʻSomewhere Sometimeʼ at Eastgallery, Brick Lane. To better inform you about the individual artists exhibiting in our upcoming exhibition (Opening Tomorrow, Friday June 11th) London Miles Gallery has interviewed a majority of the 45 featured artists.

Next up on the list is incredible illustrator and painter: CHRIS B. MURRAY.
Here is a brief digital interview we conducted with him. Take a look at the stunning piece he created for the exhibition, Titled "The Hunter", show left.

What medium do you use or prefer? I like working in acrylic because of how quick it allows me to work and the different affects I can achieve with it. When I'm working in my black book I use every type of medium under the sun.

Who or what are your inspirations?

My years of watching cartoons, looking at graffiti on trains, comic-books, hip hop culture in general, starvation.

What do you think of the New Contemporary art movement at the moment?

I love it, I think the boundaries have finally been lifted and new art forms are being more easily accepted than they may have been in the past.

Where do you think the movement is going?

I think its moving in a positive direction and will open new doors to the younger generation of artists.

Have you showed your work in Europe or The United Kingdom before?

Not until London Miles and am super excited to be a part of this show, have painted murals however.

Have you ever had an large artistic block and how did you overcome it?

Not really, I have so many ideas that I sometimes overwhelm myself by thinking I will never get enough time to share them all with the world.

Do you make art with an audience in mind or do you make it just because you like it ?

I make it for me to start, but I think because of my influences that my work speaks to most people who are in tune with music, fashion, sports, movies etc. I have a little something for everyone I feel, I try not to limit my subject matter in that regards.

What do you want show and express with your art?

I've always like to create images that are visually stimulating to the viewer. If he/she/it is able to walk away emotionally charged by my work than great, if that's not the case than at least they have something nice to look at for a period of time.

What advice would you give to the Next Generation of UK artists that what to succeed in this art genre?

Be persistent, learn when to play the sidelines and when to kick the door down. Never stop creating, your art is your voice so use that to express your thoughts for the world and the right people will listen.

What role do you think (this type of) art plays in today’s society?

An important one, this generation is hands down the most creative so people should pay attention to what we are saying.

In preparation for our upcoming exhibition, London Miles Gallery has interviewed the majority of the artists exhibiting in THE NEXT GENERATION group show. Most of the artist interviews and profiles can be found in the Exhibition Catalogs here.

Here is an interview we recently conducted with New York based artist, Stella Im Hultberg and a peek at the artwork she created for the exhibition.

What is your artistic background?

I studied industrial design in college and worked as a product designer of toys, furniture and other consumer products. But as an artist, I'm self-taught.

I mostly do paintings in various mediums, and am experimenting with sculptural works as of late.

What medium do you use or prefer?

I used to prefer oil mostly but I have learned to enjoy all medium for each of their unique nature & qualities. Lately most of my works have been mixed media of oil, acrylic, graphite, watercolor, and clay & wood sculpture.

Who or what are your inspirations?

Inspiration comes in all shapes and forms, mostly they're ideas that spring from things my mind wanders through daily. Sometimes it's books, stories, or film, or other artist's works - although if I had to find an underlying common thread, it's always about people and their lives. Mythologies are a great source of ideas as well.

Have you showed your work in Europe or The United Kingdom before?

If no, how do you feel about showing here for the first time and alongside this group of artists?

I have never shown in the UK or Europe before, and I'm excited.

I'm never sure what to think of audiences when I'm in the creating process (whether to keep them in mind or not is always a battle) but it never ceases to amaze me to meet new pool of people that appreciate art. I'm always blown away by the support, wherever the location may be, and am ever so grateful.

I am truly honored to have been invited to join this group of artists. It's a shame to not be able to see all the works in person!

7. Do you think there is a similar potential for growth for yourself and for the art movement in the UK as in The US, what do you feel are the main barriers or obstacles?

- I really do hope so - I'm not really sure what the art scene is like in the UK (not that I know it well here in the US). I personally don't see any difference in terms of creating works whether it's for the US or the UK shows. I just try to focus on what I'm creating and where I'm going with it, and maybe that's not the right way to work, but it's the only way I know how without betraying myself.

I hope that there will be something universal in what I create that can connect to people no matter where they're from.

Have you ever had an large artistic block and how did you overcome it?

I get artistic blocks only because I'm thinking of other things or other people. I just try to focus on what I want to say or put out there. I go through phases of self-doubt even in one small painting. I just take it as a normal creative process for myself, then it doesn't seem as daunting.

Of course, the very though of those "phases" of my creative processes are out there in the world permanently really gives me a panic attack sometimes.

What are your goals or aims you want to achieve with your art?

I'm not sure about the specifics yet and this is a question I'm always struggling with. I think I am always chasing that specific fragment of memories and emotions that pass through us like electricity, as vague as that may sound. (It doesn't sound like a 'goal' either).

Ultimately, I would like to be an artist that can build an honest body of work in the purest manner for as long as I can keep it that way. I don't care to be known for a style or technique, but I hope to be able to contain some ideas that I truly am at peace with.

What advice would you give to the Next Generation of UK artists that what to succeed in this

art genre?

Unfortunately, I am not sure that I deserve to give any advice. I am always struggling myself to figure out where I am most of the time.

But for any artist in any genre, I think it's important to really put yourself in it and struggle and work hard. And not do it for anything else but the love and joy of creating art itself in a manner you believe in - not for money, fame, or even honor. Otherwise it's going to be a tough road, I think!

London Miles Gallery is proud to present a group exhibition featuring a bold selection of international artists from the burgeoning New Contemporary Art movement. Produced in collaboration with Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery, and showcasing a comprehensive selection of forty-five of the most exciting and talented individuals working within this movement, ‘The Next Generation’ brings the best new international talent right to the doorstep of London’s Contemporary art community.

Curated by Thinkspace Gallery Director Andrew Hosner, the exhibition features 12 x 12 inch works of art from a fastidiously handpicked selection of emerging and established artists. Shattering preconceptions and enlightening the British art sector as to the artistic and aesthetic integrity of the New Contemporary art movement, never one to stand still, London Miles Gallery is already looking ahead in delivering the best new talent to UK shores as part of this cross waters collaboration.

As well as presenting you with a 45 person art show, we are working with local artists and emerging talent to create a 15 foot tall sculpture out of recycled cardboard boxes. The project aims to bring together emerging artists in a community project that builds awareness about emerging artists , contemporary art and the importance of recycling in our Generation.
The installation will be built and constructed by more than 1000 boxes, all hand painted by emerging artists. The project is open to any artist or inspiring artist from the new generation of contemporary art living in London.

Both the exhibition and box project will be launched together in one massive celebration for contemporary art.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get it from my dreams, any time day or night. It might bother me in some ways.

Q: Your color palette is crazy, how did it evolve?
According to my mother, my color was already crazy when I began to paint at an early age, but it was too strong and messed up. I think it was refined thanks to the study at an art university.

Scott C's first Comic book workshop

After the successful opening of Everybody, All the Time on Thursday evening, Scott C gathered around the gallery space on Saturday the 6th of March and hosted his first comic book workshop. Scott spoke about his process of creativity, developing story boards, characters and his unique way of creating his artwork. The workshop was held inside the gallery where "Everbody, All the Time" is currently on display until the March 15th.

The Exhibition will then be moved to the London Miles showroom located in Westbourne studios, 242 acklam road. Studio 303. Everybody, All the time will be on show until April 1st.

LMG Interview with Alex Young

A rising star of the UK Outsider Art movement, Alex Young is currently preparing for his forthcoming solo show with London Miles Gallery on Thursday, April 1. Succeeding his hugely successful debut show ‘Exhibitionism’ at the Grenade Gallery in 2008, Young’s new body of work looks set to expand his artistic and conceptual horizons to even loftier new heights.

Traversing the boundaries of Fine Art, Illustration, and Graffiti, Young revels in his inability to be pigeonholed. Finding inspiration in the work of both Classical and Contemporary Art masters, as well as various cannons of popular culture, his finely detailed pointillist style portraits are a trademark of his studio work. Rendered predominantly in spray paint, Young’s primary medium of choice points to years of dedication to bombing the streets as a writer – an endeavor committed to alongside years of formal art training.

Keeping separate his Graffiti and Fine Art guises, Alex Young, the artist, draws upon the similarly rich dichotomy’s evident in other pseudonymous individuals. His subjects include a burlesque dancer, S&M model, and heavy metal guitarist to name but three, whose alternate identities are all revealed through the fine illustrative detail and multi-layered symbolism evident, on closer inspection, within his monolithic portraits. Essentially, Young is reaffirming the age-old adage that one shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover; in turn condemning the widespread societal prejudice exhibited towards these individuals.

A graduate of Kent Institute, and recognized as one of the UK’s top 60 most talented University leavers by Creative Review magazine in 2002, Young resided in Brighton for seven years, working predominantly as a freelance illustrator, before relocating to South London in early 2010, where he currently lives and works.

In contrast to his gallery work, his heavily stylized illustrations are primarily informed by the D.I.Y, sub-cultural paradigms of skateboarding, punk, and comic book culture of the mid-to-late-80’s. Instantly gratifying and provocative, these works display Young’s quintessential Outsider art credentials.

Speaking to him in-depth about his experiences and inspirations, it’s clear that Young is an artist continually co-opting the multitude of influences that play upon his mind. Ahead of his second solo exhibition this spring, he talks with great enthusiasm for everything from Close and Kandinksy to calligraphy and comics, giving an up close and personal insight into the foundation for his new show, and his wider artistic endeavors to date.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and first interest in art?

I was born into soaking up a lot of artwork, a lot of different stuff. Neither of my parents are artists but their knowledge of Art History is incredible. Growing up my sister and I got dragged around loads of exhibitions. My old man used to work for British Airways so we traveled a lot and every port of call we’d hit the art museums. Then in the mid-80's, when the big explosion of hip hop culture hit England, I lent more towards the graffiti side of things. That was the most exciting stuff for me: growing up in west London and seeing tags get put up, but not really understanding what they were and that it was a sub-cultural thing. Some of the first stuff I saw was skateboard graffiti and I became a skateboarder as well, so I got into these two subcultures and found a lot of comfort in them.

Skateboarding was one of those freedom activities. It was as much about hanging out and being part of something as it was being rad at it. The same with graffiti; you might not be the best stylistically but you might have done more than anyone else, you might just be out there every day. Same with skateboarding; you might not be the best but you're out there everyday; you're the dude, you're ‘that’ guy. It's all on your own terms; it's within your group, it's not societies terms. It was this kind of fraternity of weirdo's where it's like “Fuck that way of life, you're all right. Come in here, and do this, and get respect from your peers, and how good does that feel?”

Another appeal about skateboarding was all the graphics on the boards. I came into skateboarding in the late 80's when it was the era of skulls and snakes and dragons - Powell Peralta style - and then it went into World Industries which was much more radical and really offensive - just real shock stuff and constant parodies of other things in popular culture. The appeal of all those graphics was the fact that they were just rad for rad's sake; whereas the art education system was asking: “Why have you handed in this project of this monster fighting a robot with lasers coming out of their eyes?”

What are your thoughts about skateboard graphics conceptually though – if you were pushed?

Have you read the book Disposable? If you ever read any book about skateboarding read that. It just talks about how disposable the artwork is: you buy it cause it's rad but within weeks it's not there anymore...but in people's mind's it lasts forever. I've got a tattoo of a skateboard from that era, from 1989 - Santa Cruz Skateboard Company. It's a real boys tattoo; it's disgusting! Any girl I show it to is just like, “Oh my God, what's your problem?!” That sort of stuff blew my mind so much and got me into painting those kind of aggro characters in graffiti.

So you share many of the classic interests of other Outsider artists growing up in that era?

(Laughs) Yeah, let me chuck another cliché in there: I was a massive comic book fan from an early age. Most influential probably was 2000AD - brilliant British made comic that started in the 70's. It'd have five or six stories in it every fortnight, all serialised, it was a bit like sitting down and watching TV for a few hours. It was just so much different from your Batman and other stuff like that. The writing on the American comics has got much better over the years, but 2000AD was just something else.

Tell us about your hiatus between college and your Access course at London College of Printing.

It was just four years of pretty much doing graffiti and working bum jobs. Throughout that time I was still drawing in my sketchbooks everyday and painting, and then finally decided to go back to school because that’s all I ever wanted to do. I went and studied at London College of Printing, which is now London College of Communication, and then got into the Kent Institute of Art & Design and did four years of an Illustration Degree.

For a long time in my life the graffiti artist within me was running things - but the artist was a big part of me as well. I'd go to University and a lot of my projects would be about graffiti and they might involve illegal elements that the teachers couldn’t encourage openly, but with a little wink they would. They thought it was interesting stuff that I'd actually be going out and painting my projects on the street and taking photo's during the day and handing them in as an illustration project. My sketchbooks from back then are just absolutely ram-jammed full of graffiti outlines.

Since exhibiting your artwork in galleries though, you’ve kept your fine artist persona totally separate from your graffiti persona?

For my last show, the idea came from my experiences as a graffiti artist, and an artist...and the fact that I was operating under two names, and how I kept the two very separate. My graffiti persona is this other guy, more like the Wolf Man or Mr. Hyde rampaging through the streets. It was a character that I'd built up, or tried to build up, in other people's minds as quite an aggressive person who you wouldn't want to meet. I then found that in different social situations people would expect a certain thing from me as this one guy, and then in a different social situation people would expect something else.

When you meet graff writers or other people meet you, it's like “Oh, your him! But, I thought you were black, or I heard you were in prison, etc.” Or people say “We met so-and-so the other day, he's just this little dude, got these mad, thick glasses on!” You build up these impressions of people and it's all just folklore, city folklore and hype. I started thinking about how I had this 'Superman syndrome'. I read books about it - Nancy McDonald wrote this book called The Graffiti Subculture: Youth, Identity, and Spray Paint I think it was. She was talking about this 'Superman syndrome' where by day you were mild-mannered Clark Kent, then you got to go out in the evening and have your superhero name almost, your one-word name, and you go out there and you're a completely different person, and this other group of people think something completely different of you. It's this escape, a playground where you can act out different parts of your personality that wouldn't be acceptable in your everyday life.

But it's not just graffiti artists; there are all sorts of people, especially these days with the internet. Under a different name, behind a computer screen where no one can see you, you can act out a different persona. You might be a librarian by day and the most timid woman around, and then you go on a sex forum at night as SlutKitten and you’re the most overly sexed being imaginable. It's an outlet, just by switching the name; it's an outlet for you to play with your personality.

For my first show, I got in touch with all different types of strippers and met up with them for cups of tea in the afternoon and had conversations about their experiences. They all operate under a different name too. Graffiti's kind of trendy now, but say back in the day if I was to mention I was a graffiti artist I'd come up against quite a lot of negative preconceptions, the same ways as if these girls went to a dinner party and said they were a stripper - instant preconceptions. One of the women, she's a pharmacist, she's also an extra-curricular physics teacher for GCSE's and A-Levels and she's got two kids...and then she's a burlesque trapeze artist too - she strips on a trapeze. I'm going to be doing paintings of her for this exhibition.

You employ and experiment with a wide range of styles and media, how do you feel about developing a certain recognizable style? Do you often find yourself struggling with identity?

When I was younger I really struggled with the concept of having a style. It must be from being influenced by so much different stuff from a young age, from being exposed to so many different types of artwork and learning from them all. When I went to the Guggenheim Museum in New York and I discovered Kandinsky, when I was about eleven, I fell in love with Kandinsky - an abstract artist. My parents wanted to support me so they bought me a book on the guy and I opened the book and it was all traditional portraits and landscapes, and then later it goes into the abstract stuff and his theories on colour and it just blew my mind. Same when I went to a Chuck Close exhibition at the Hayward Gallery. He's doing these photorealistic airbrush pieces and then if you’re stood right up close to one of his paintings it's an abstract painting. The way they were so monolithic: there's just nothing going on. They're so huge and every detail's there, but nothing's going on in the picture at all, nothing, it's just not saying anything.

All of this started to eat away at my mind, so I'd come back from a Chuck Close exhibition and I'd start drawing stuff like that, then maybe chuck a bit of Kandinsky in after I'd seen that, and maybe even Where's Wally...I'd think “That would blow my mind,” so I'd try to draw the most detailed stuff I'd ever seen. Then I’d go to China and watch some calligraphers out there and come back and try and get emotion across in the least amount of brush strokes possible. I was trying out everything, thinking, “Why would I spend the rest of my life just settling on one expression?” The creative world is so big. To be allowed to experience it all, and soak it all up, and just behold it is a real pleasure.

So you have now taken your creativity off the canvas and on to 3 dimensional pieces and installations. What are you getting your hands dirty with at the moment and what new artworks can we look forward to in the coming future?

Yeah, I'm working with animal skulls. I can put the skull in front of me and draw it, but that didn't make any sense. It made much more sense having it in front of me and to paint on it. The location of the artwork changes everything. If there's the actual dead animal's bones there with painting all over them there's a whole different feeling that the viewers going to get from it.

That's what I think about graffiti: the whole thing with putting graffiti in art galleries; that stinks to me cause graffiti is location specific. In the early days no one ever broke into galleries and started doing graff, they broke into train yards. I just feel that to take graffiti off a train or a wall and put it in a gallery sucks, it loses its whole meaning, the same way as me doing a drawing ‘of’ a skull or ‘on’ a skull.

What attracted you to using dead animal skulls? They must be quite difficult to source?

Powell Peralta skateboards back in the day got me mad into skulls. I got a lot of them off Ebay, and some of them I've got the animals and boiled their heads up myself - it's horrible, I don't really like doing it! What you're paying for on Ebay is that they've bleached the skull, so they're nice and white. A pig's skull on the internet will go for twenty-five, thirty quid, or it's a fiver from the butchers and you do it yourself. It just stinks, and you have to cut its eyeballs out and poke its brain out – it is disgusting, but it’s character building! I wanted to have more of a connection to what I'm doing.

They'll be presented in glass domes - there'll be a painted animal skull with flowers around it and live butterflies and real animal furs. I wanted to make them functional objects as well, so I wanted them to be lights like table lights, and create a wooden base at the bottom that has a cavity in it with the lights in, and then all the fancy display is on top, but is really essentially just bare bones. It’s based a lot on tattoo imagery and Mexican sugar skulls I’m interested in - Day of the Dead skulls.

So coming up this April you have your first solo show since your last show with Grenade Gallery back in 2008- How have you developed the concept for the new show with London Miles Gallery?

I've gathered together a motley crew of strays and weirdos - I've got the trapeze artist, a latex clothing designer and model, a heavy metal guitarist, a female dubstep DJ, an internet stripper, a graffiti artist: there's all some sort of performance element there, there's an audience for all of it, and all of them use different names.

Because I don't want people to judge a book by its cover so to speak, I want to present it as if it's a puzzle: ‘Within these portraits there is a trapeze artist, a latex model etc...’ but not telling you who's who. There will be symbolism in there; for this show I wanted to bring more illustrative qualities into these paintings and more of that Visual Communication education that I had. I'm still going to use spray paint, but I'm going to put illustrations within the paint, the relative symbolism - from the conversations that I have with these people. How the paint churns up and drips, there'll be stuff in there so it's quite subtle from a distance but up close their whole face is made out of illustrative figures or symbolism. In the past, up close these paintings were abstract and from far away they were portrait, but that didn't still make sense with regards this dichotomy I wanted to highlight.

London Miles Gallery is proud to present the first European solo show from acclaimed international comic book artist, painter, illustrator, and computer game designer Scott Campbell, aka Scott C. Showcasing more than 100 new original watercolour paintings, ‘Everybody, all the time’ delves deeper than ever before into the American’s mischievous and curious imagination to reveal the artist at his idiosyncratic and playful best. Through a multitude of storyboards and illustrated narratives, Campbell renders his escapist daydreams in the form of often-humorous and light-hearted scenarios featuring intriguing and otherworldly creatures. With one of the Comic Art scene’s leading lights presenting an entirely new body of work, ‘Everybody, all the time’ promises to be an exhibition of high entertainment for Comic Book aficionados, followers, and fans of Pop Surrealism alike.

In June 2009 London Miles presented the hugely successful ‘Supreme Broship’, a joint exhibition of work between Scott C. and Jim Mahfood. We are delighted to welcome back Scott C. for the first of London Miles’ site-specific exhibitions of 2010.

Comic Book Workshop

Scott C. will host his first Comic Art and Illustration workshop on Saturday 6^th March 2010, at 12:30pm and 4:00pm. The hour and a half workshops will be located at 47 Mowlem Street in east London on the Saturday following the show’s opening. Learn from an accomplished comic book artist the basics of character development, techniques of drawing, and the progression of individual style, in this practical and close-up workshop environment.
